WHERE WAS WARBY PARKER WHEN I WAS 12?

The year was 1986, and I was 12 years old.  Girls who had big, buck teeth (me) had braces.  Girls who had stick-straight hair (me) had perms.  And girls who couldn't see more than a couple of inches in front of them (me) wore glasses.  The terrible trio, if you will.  No one should ever don all of these things at once.

For the purposes of this blog post, I will cut myself a little slack on the braces, and even on the perm. But, the glasses...there was just no excuse.  I'm not sure that I blame my own poor taste, though.  I don't remember having much of a choice in the way of frames.  Glasses weren't attractive.  Their primary purpose was to help you see, and their secondary purpose was to gain you dork status in the 7th grade.

These days, glasses are a fun accessory.  People actually want to wear glasses, whether they need them for vision improvement or not.  The problem is that all of the great looking frames seem to be REALLY expensive.

I had just about given up on finding an affordable pair that wouldn't land me back in my aforementioned state of dork-dom, when I walked into Need Supply Co. in Carytown this summer and saw the amazing display of Warby Parker frames lining the back corner of the store.  There was such a great selection!  I was having fun trying them all on when I was told that every single pair cost $95!!  Being skeptical, I came home to check it out and found out that the price includes anti-reflective prescription lenses, shipping, and 30-day returns.  Folks as nearsighted as I pay about $30 extra to get the non-coke bottle lenses, but $125 (including the ability to return them) is still an amazing deal!  Moreover, the company does some real good.  For every pair sold, one is given to someone in need.  I can get on board with that...and I did!  I got these:

Warby Parker's new Fall Line is out today (they also carry sunglasses), and I'm feeling like I need another pair.  According to the company, this collection is a "reverent bow to some of our literary favorites of the midcentury."  I can't decide which ones to get, but I will either use their "Virtual Try-On," or I'll just mosey on down to Need Supply and try some on.  If you don't live near a store that carries them, no worries.  They will ship you up to 5 frames to try before you buy.  Here are some of my contenders:
