ARE RULES MEANT TO BE BROKEN? WHEN TO WEAR WHITE

Just 18 days left until you can wear white, right?  Well, I say it's really up to you.

Coco Chanel did white right!

Over the years, there have been multiple theories as to why this "no white after labor day" etiquette rule existed in the first place.  Some believe it was quite utilitarian.  White is cooler than darker colors, and since folks weren't clad in crop tops, lounging in the AC "way back when," it seems like a reasonable explanation.  Others say it had to do with differentiating socio-economic classes.  Those who could afford a summer-long vacation would relax all season in their upper-class suits and hats of white.  Can you picture it??  When summer was over, they'd head home and get back to work wearing darker colored business clothing.  Still, others don't believe either theory and just say it is what it is.  (Source)

I consider myself a polite person with a healthy appreciation for tradition and etiquette.  I think people should write thank-you letters (and yes--I am VERY guilty of breaking this rule, and the guilt is ugly).  I always hold the door for others and find it rude when someone blatantly forgets that one.  I make my children put their napkins in their laps and ask to be excused from the table.  But when it comes to fashion, I believe the most important rule to follow is to wear clothing that fits you, flatters your figure, and makes you feel good about yourself.

So, for my dear friend/reader who asked me to touch on this topic:  Jenny, unless you're having Sunday brunch with Granny and her friends, wear that white, girl!!  It's ok by me!  And, if my permission isn't enough, maybe you'll take Emily Post's word for it.

I strive to make wardrobe choices clear and easy for women who are short on time, overwhelmed by their closets, or transitioning from one period of life to another.  Let's connect!
