BUT FIRST: WHY I TAKE A SELFIE

Love 'em or hate 'em, it looks like selfies aren't going anywhere anytime soon.  Sure, they're a little overdone on social media, but as a stylist, an #OOTD (outfit of the day) picture is a really valuable tool!

I take selfies and post them on Instagram to show my followers what I'm wearing, in hopes that they can take some of my ideas and apply them to their own wardrobes. (And, ok, maybe in hopes that someone will say I'm cute.  If you think I'm cute, you should feel free to say so in the comments below;)

When I work with clients on a Wardrobe Revival or shopping for new looks, I always take pictures of the outfits we put together.  Of course, the main reason for this is so that they can remember all of the combinations we made, making it faster and easier to recreate those looks on busy mornings.  A picture also often helps clients see how they look in an outfit from an outsider's perspective.  I'll sometimes take a picture of 2 different ways of styling a piece of clothing so that they can choose a favorite.  Other times I use pictures to prove a point.  (See how tucking that shirt in just showed the world you actually have a killer bod??)

Here's the thing:  I don't live with my clients.  So, what happens when I leave?  Hopefully, they don't just keep wearing the same outfits over and over again.  I try to give my clients the tools to create fresh, new combinations so that they're making the most of their wardrobes.   And I always tell them that when they create a look that they really love, they should take a selfie!  Not to post on social media (necessarily), but to add to the pictures that I took and have something to reference when they have to rush out the door to that early morning meeting.

Stylist tip:  Spend 30 minutes on Sunday night trying out different combinations in your closet.  Don't worry about the misses...you're the only one who will see them.  But if you get a hit, snap a picture of it.  You'll be surprised at how many new outfits you'll find, without even going in a store!

As a personal stylist and personal shopper in Richmond, VA, I strive to make wardrobe choices clear and easy for women who are short on time, overwhelmed by their closets, or transitioning from one period of life to another.  Let's connect!
