FRIDAY STYLE TIP: HEM FOR THE SHOE

Nothing ruins an otherwise great look quite like a hemline that's too short or too long.  That's why it's important to hem your pants to go EITHER with flats OR with heels.  Yes, we all wish we could wear our favorite trousers with every shoe in our closet, but it simply can't be.

TOO SHORT

If you think you'll wear the pants mostly with flats, take a pair of flats to the tailor when you have them hemmed.  If you think you'll wear heels, take those with you.  If you want to wear them with both, buy 2 pairs of the same pants.  Generally speaking, the hem should hit about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch above the ground.

Sorry, Victoria.  TOO LONG

There is an exception to this "rule."  Skinny or tailored, ankle-lenth pants will basically stay put, regardless of heel height and will not necessarily require altering.

As a personal stylist in Richmond, VA, I strive to make wardrobe choices clear and easy for women who are short on time, overwhelmed by their closets, or transitioning from one period of life to another.  Let's connect!
